How Can Getting Tired Be Good for My Health?

Believe it or not, it is normal to feel “worn out” after you’ve been out playing or helping with work in the yard. If you’ve been getting a lot of exercise, your body is going to need to rest for a while. But, this is not a bad thing.

Getting exercise or working on something uses your muscles. In the process, your muscles are growing stronger - including your heart muscle. But, no one can keep going forever without stopping to rest. The good news, though, is that the more you use your muscles, the longer you will be able to keep going before you have to stop and rest. Think of marathon runners. They couldn’t run 26 miles before they began training for the race. But, after working hard for a long time, exercising their muscles for a longer and longer period each time, they eventually became able to run a long distance without stopping to rest.

Another way that getting tired helps our health is by making us want to sleep. We all need sleep - a time when the body is able to basically shut down for a while so that we can get up and go another day. If you’ve ever had trouble sleeping, you know how hard it is to keep your mind on the things that you need to do, and this makes your body lack energy, too. So, by getting tired, we are led by our bodies to get the rest that we must have to function properly.
